Where Rain Once Stopped Lessons, a Future Is Now Taking Shape

For education to thrive, it takes more than textbooks. Children need a place where they feel safe, can concentrate and have the opportunity to learn every day.

That was exactly what the children at Swalha Orphanage in Kenya were missing.

The classrooms were in a shocking condition. Mould covered the walls, the roof leaked and during the rainy season, the rooms regularly flooded. Lessons had to be cancelled time and again because the rooms were unusable. There were also no permanent teachers. For many children, this meant no reliable education and little chance to fulfil their potential.

More than a renovation

Together with our German architect Amin Rissane, we completely redesigned and rebuilt the classrooms. This was about more than repairing walls or replacing roofs. Our aim was to create a learning environment suited to the local climate and provide the children with better opportunities for years to come.

At the heart of the new building is a specially designed “breathing roof”. While heat builds up intensely beneath conventional metal roofs, often making lessons almost impossible, this design uses natural air circulation: warm air rises and escapes while cooler air flows continuously through the room. This creates a much more comfortable indoor climate even on hot days – without energy-intensive air conditioning.

The classrooms were also fitted with natural lighting, new school furniture and urgently needed teaching materials. Dark, dilapidated rooms have been transformed into bright spaces where learning is possible again.

Education needs consistency

Just as important as the new buildings are the people who bring them to life. That is why World of Peace e.V. now funds permanent teachers, enabling the children to attend lessons regularly.

For many of the orphaned children, this is their first experience of a structured school day. They can learn consistently, build friendships and develop skills that will later help them lead independent lives.

A classroom can change lives

A safe roof overhead, a dry classroom and a teacher waiting for the children every morning – things many take for granted are changing the lives of an entire generation here.

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. With every day of lessons, the children gain not only knowledge and skills, but also confidence, hope and prospects for the future.

A place where rain once brought lessons to an end and heat made learning impossible has become a school where children can now learn, laugh and dream of a better future every day.
